Neste livro, Martin Seligman amplia o objetivo da Psicologia Positiva, movimento que liderou por 15 anos.

O livro é dividido em duas partes. Na primeira seu foco é a nova abordagem na Psicologia Positiva que passa a ter como objeto o bem-estar e não a felicidade. Uma nova definição da Psicologia Positiva seria a ciência que investiga o bem-estar que pode ser mensurado através de cinco fatores: emoção positiva, engajamento, sentido, relacionamentos positivos e realização.

O principal objetivo na abordagem anterior era aumentar o nível de satisfação com a vida e, nessa nova abordagem é aumentar o florescimento das pessoas, ou seja, o despertar para um modo de vida mais adaptativo e com a presença de emoções como bom humor, esperança, resiliência e otimismo.

Seligman apresenta exercícios que levam ao aumento do bem-estar bem como resultados de casos clínicos tratados de acordo com essa abordagem.

O autor relata também a experiência da criação, no ano de 2005, do primeiro programa de mestrado acadêmico em Psicologia Positiva Aplicada na Universidade da Pensilvânia (MAPP) cujos resultados serviram de base para um projeto desenvolvido na escola secundária de Geelong, na Austrália, com jovens. Neste projeto liderou uma intervenção ao longo de um ano, a fim de comprovar a importância de que a escola também ensinasse o bem-estar aos seus jovens fomentando assim a implementação de uma educação chamada positiva.

Na segunda parte do livro, Formas de florescer, o autor aborda a inteligência e de que modo o contexto contemporâneo tem privilegiado a velocidade, em vez do raciocínio e da qualidade. Reforça que responsabilidade e livre arbítrio são processos necessários dentro da psicologia positiva e que os seres humanos são frequentemente movidos pelo futuro em vez de conduzidos pelo passado.

Nesta segunda parte apresenta diversos exemplos de intervenção. Descreve o Programa de Aptidão Abrangente para Soldados, cuja intenção era criar um exército apto física e psicologicamente, com recursos para enfrentar situações de forte estresse emocional, tanto no trabalho como em família.

Outro programa foi desenvolvido para ex soldados com estresse pós-traumático. O foco do programa era o crescimento que poderia ser buscado após o trauma. Desse modo, criou-se um treinamento em resiliência, de forma a ajuda-los a desenvolver uma atitude mais positiva diante da vida e de suas adversidades.

Trata também da saúde física positiva, questionando a definição de saúde da Organização Mundial da Saúde, proposta em 1946. À ausência de doenças, Seligman acrescenta a presença de emoções positivas, conduzindo a um quadro de efetivo bem-estar. Com o foco na prevenção de doenças e na promoção da saúde, Seligman aborda alguns treinamentos que podem e devem ser desenvolvidos como forma de proteger a população, levando à adoção de uma postura otimista e diretamente ligada ao bem-estar.

No último capítulo o autor aborda a relação entre dinheiro e felicidade e sugere que existem outros recursos que comprovem o desenvolvimento de um país que não apenas o PIB. Sugere que o índice de satisfação com a vida poderia ser utilizado para sabermos onde estão as pessoas que se consideram mais felizes e as estratégias por elas utilizadas uma vez que existem pesquisas que demonstram que há países pobres cuja população apresenta altos índices de satisfação com a vida.

No final do livro encontramos uma versão reduzida do Teste de Forças Pessoais, elaborado pelo próprio autor, que apresenta itens que revelam as principais virtudes que devem ser cultivadas: Sabedoria e Conhecimento, Coragem, Humanidade e Amor, Justiça, Temperança e Transcendência.

O livro é rico em exemplos, exercícios e conversas com renomados pesquisadores da Psicologia e descreve casos e dados de mais de 30 anos de pesquisas que apresentam forte impacto no conhecimento científico internacional.

In this book Martin Seligman broadens the objective of the Positive Psychology, movement that he has led for 15 years.

The book is divided in two parts. In the first part the focus is the new approach in Positive Psychology, which object is now the well-being and not the happiness. A new definition of Positive Psychology would be the science that investigates the well-being that can be measured by five factors: positive emotion, engagement, meaning, positive relationships and accomplishment.

Concerning the previous approach, the main goal was to increase the life satisfaction and, in this new approach, the goal is to increase the flourishing of people, that is to say, the awakening to a more adaptative lifestyle and with emotions such as good mood, hope, resilience and optmism.

Seligman presents some exercises that lead to the increase of the well-being, as well as some results of clinical cases treated pursuant to this new approach.

The author also reports the experience of creating, in 2005, the first academic master program in Applied Positive Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania (MAPP), which results were the base for a project developed at Geelong highschool, Australia, with young people. In this project he headed an action for over a year, in order to prove the importance of the school teaching the well-being to their students, boosting the implementation of a so called positive education.

In the second part of the book, Ways of flourishing, the author approaches the intelligence and how the contemporary context has favoured the speed, instead of the reasoning and quality. He emphasizes that responsibility and free choice are necessary processes within positive psychology and that human beings are often moved by the future instead of driven by the past.

In this second part he presents several examples of intervention. He describes the Comprehensive Soldier Fitness program, which goal was to create a physically and psychologically fit army, with resources to face great emotional stress situations, whether at work or at home.

Another program was developed for ex-soldiers with post-traumatic stress disorder. The program was focused on the growth that could be searched after the trauma. So a training in resilience was created, in order to help them to develop a more positive attitude towards life and its adversities.

He also deals with the positive physical health, questioning the definition of health by World Health Organization, proposed in 1946. To the diseases absence, Seligman adds the presence of positive emotions, driving to an effective well-being. Focusing on the prevention of diseases and promotion of health, Seligman approacheses some trainings that can and must be developed as a way to protect the population, leading to the adoption of an optimistic outlook and directly linked to the well-being.

In the last chapter the author approaches the relation between money and happiness and suggests that there are other resources to substantiate a country development, others than GDP. He suggests that the life satisfaction index could be utilized for us to know where the people that consider themselves happier are, and their strategies, since there are some researches which demonstrate that the populations of some poor countries present high index of life satisfaction.

At the end of the book we can find a short version of the Personal Capabilities Test, prepared by the author himself, that present items that reveal the main virtues to be cultivated: Wisdom and Knowledge, Bravery, Humanity and Love, Justice, Temperance and Transcendence..

The book is full of examples, exercises and conversations with famous researchers of Psychology and describes cases and data of more than 30 years of research, that have a strong impact on the international scientific knowledge.
